Fish identification course

Discover marine life with a more expert eye underwater with the Fish Identification course for certified divers.

The Fish Identification specialty will allow you to better understand the marine ecosystem. You will acquire the necessary skills to recognize and classify Mediterranean species during the dive, applying technical criteria of observation, morphology and behavior.

What is the Fish Identification specialty?

The fish identification course is one of our diving specialties for divers (minimum Open Water) who want to recognize and classify marine species underwater.

The training focuses on the identification of fish and marine fauna of the Mediterranean through the analysis of morphology, behavior and natural habitat. It combines specific theory on local species with 2 practical dives where you will apply observation and classification criteria. At the end you will obtain the official Fish Identification certification.

What will you learn in the Fish Identification course?

During 2 dives you will develop the necessary skills to identify the marine life around you and recognize species with technical criteria, beyond a superficial observation.

You will learn to differentiate species by analyzing body shape, fins, coloration, patterns and distinctive features that allow them to be correctly classified underwater.

You will understand how the marine ecology of each habitat influences the presence of species, identifying patterns of behavior and distribution.

You will apply techniques to memorize, record and confirm species during and after the dive, using underwater photography to document marine fauna.

Questions and doubts

During the training, you’ll be obsessed with spotting Mediterranean legends like white seabream, saddled seabream, gilthead seabream, groupers (oh, the groupers!), salema porgy, painted comber, wrasses, and even the sneaky scorpionfish, among other finned friends.

We’re talking real diver skills: silhouette analysis, body shape secrets, coloration patterns that pop, behavior clues, and knowing their natural habitat like the back of your hand. We’ll also deep-dive into the frequent flyers of Malta’s dive sites, putting practical ID skills to the test on every dive.

You’ll walk away with the official Fish Identification Specialty Diver certification – your license to name-drop like a marine biologist!

You bet! Gotta have your Open Water certification (or the equivalent) locked down before you jump into this specialty.

Two mind-blowing dives. That’s where the magic happens – putting the theory into practice and ID’ing like a pro.

One day. That’s all it takes to go from fish-novice to fish-fanatic. We jam-pack it with local species knowledge and serious in-water practice.

Minimum age is 10. We keep the groups tight – max 6 divers – so you get the hand-picked attention you deserve.
